Gaels second half fightback knocks Celts out
14th July 2010 Cootehill Celtic 1 - 11 Shannon Gaels 3 - 10 A second half fightback from a strong Shannon Gaels side ended Cootehill Under 16s hopes in the Division 4 Championship on Wednesday night in Páirc Gaeil na Siónainne. Cootehill were missing a host of players due to injury and holidays and so fielded just the bare 13 players with some very young players taking the field for the Celtics but they all played their part and did the club proud. Despite making the long trip up to Blacklion, the Celts opened well and a Tom Hayes goal helped to propel them into a 1 - 4 to 1 - 2 half time lead. Gradually though after the break the physical stronger and bigger home side began to take control of the game. That said, with the game in its final stages the Celts were only trailing by 2 points but the Gaels got through for two late goals to seal their win with one of those green flags coming from a 'soft' penalty decision. The final whistle sounded soon after the penalty was converted and Shannon Gaels were 5 point winners in the end and advanced to the semi-finals while Cootehill will enter the Shield Competition. Cootehill Celtic: Joseph Freeman; Barry Smith, Johnny McKay; Christopher Keenan, Aaron Cosgrove, James McKitterick; John Carney, Ryan Reilly; Fiachra Hughes, Tom Hayes, Ordhán Reilly; Seán O'Connor, Dylan Sherlock. |
