Under 13s enjoy good win over Shercock Cootehill Celtic 2 - 12 Shercock 0 - 04 Cootehill Celtic were clear winners against a visiting Shercock side in the Under 13 Roinn E league on Monday night last (31st August) with an impressive second half display paving the way to a 14 point win. The first half was a close run affair with just a single score separating the sides at the break but after half time the Celts dominated proceedings with the visitors only registering a single point. In what was a game with understandably heavy underfoot conditions given all the recent rainfall, it was the would be losers who scored first with two points either side of a Caoimhín Carney point put them ahead by the tenth minute. Jason Halton was moved from the forwards into the half back line which helped keep the Shercock attack in check and two points from Carney, one from play and one from a free, put the Celtics in front for the first time by the end of the first quarter. Another Shercock point levelled the game in a half where scores were hard to come by. Five minutes before the break, the Celts struck a killer blow with Carney raising a green flag after going close several times beforehand to leave Cootehill in front by that goal at the short whistle. Cootehill certainly found their rhythm in the second thirty minutes of the game with Dermie Connolly and Sean O’Connor seeing plenty of the ball in the middle of the park, the forwards had plenty of possession to create scoring chances. Dylan Rooney and Carney converted early opportunities to raise white flags before sub. Kielan McCarville fisted a high ball into the Shercock net to kill the game off. Good defensive play from Gearóid McDonald and Josh Reilly backed up by Tomás McCullough and Jason Halton kept Shercock at bay and the Celts on the front foot. Good work by Mickey O’Neill, Rooney and McCarville ensure dangerman Carney had a good supply of ball which he used to good effect. The Hoops recorded seven more points before the end through Carney (5) and Dermie Connolly (2) while all Shercock could record was a solitary point. In all it was a good performance from the Cootehill youngsters with all the team and the two subs playing good football in a sporting manner.
