Hurling in Cootehill

The rejuvenation of hurling in the club kicked off in March 2004 when a sub-committee was established following the staging of a public meeting in St. Michaels' Hall, Cootehill.

Initially, children under 10, both boys and girls, underwent training in the fundamentals of the game and within a year, the club was competing against other Cavan teams in league and championship fare but with little success.

In 2006 though, the club made substantial progress, fielding teams at both under 12 and under 14 levels while its six-man indoor team reached the Ulster Under 10 Division Three indoor final only to lose out to Antrim champions Larne, after extra-time.

The same year the club won its first trophy when it beat Kingscourt to lift the Under 14 Division Three Shield title, a title it successfully defended in 2007.

Then in 2008 the club's under 12s scooped the Division Three title with victory over Bruise Mountain.

In 2009, the under 14s reached the Division One final but lost out to hot favourites Woodford Gaels in a game played in the spring of 2010.

In 2010, the club decided to enter its under 12s, 14s and 16s in the Monaghan leagues as well as the Cavan leagues.

In 2011, Cootehill's under 16 team had a mixed season in Cavan but reached the Monaghan league final only to lose out to Truagh.

The club continues to compete in league competitions in Cavan and Monaghan.

In February, 2012, the club ended a 30 year famine when it's under 14s won the Feile na nGael title by defeating defending champions St. Felim's in the final at Breffni Park.

At this juncture, Cootehill Celtic is one of the strongest hurling fraternities in county Cavan.

Up to a dozen players have been honoured by selection on the 2011 and 2012 Cavan minor squads and the hope is that these players will form the core of a senior team to represent the club in the coming years.
