McCutcheon Named in New Look Cavan Team

Ulster SFC Quarter Final: Cavan v Donegal

8th June 2011

Cootehill Celtic Senior Captain John McCutcheon will line out at centre-back for Cavan in their Ulster Championship Quarter-final clash with Donegal in Kingspan Breffni Park this Sunday.

In fact John is the only defender who has played Senior Inter-County Championship before in a young and new-look Breffni side named by Joint-Managers Val Andrews and Terry Hyland.

Eight Championship debuts have been handed out in what is the new management's first combined Championship outing together. No doubt encouraged by the run to the All-Ireland Final by the Under 21s last month, youth has definitely been given a chance to perform.

Five first starts have named in the backs while another three see Senior Championship action for the first time in the forward line. James McEnroe, Patrick Carroll and Dane O'Dowd, Niall Murray and Damien Reilly come into the backline while in attack Gearóid McKiernan, Fergal Flanagan and Niall McDermott are drafted in.

Things lining out as expected, Ballinagh clubman will be lining up against Donegal Danger man and Captain Michael Murphy who is most likely going to be named at full-forward and Cavan wing-forward Micheal Lyng will play in the first round of Ulster for the first time since his debut in 2004.

Goalkeeper James Reilly is the most experienced man in a Cavan shirt having made his first start a year before Lyng in 2003.

Interestingly Cavan Senior Champions Kingscourt have no representatives on the starting 15 with eight players playing Senior Club Championship, six playing at Intermediation Championship Grade and just one, Mountnugent's David Givney, playing in the Junior club Championship.

Donegal already have a game under their belts with a six point (1-10 to 0-7) preliminary round victory over Antrim in Antrim at Mac Cumhail Park in Ballybofey last month. Mark McHugh, son of Martin - who was in charge of Cavan when they last taste provincial success in 1997, grabbed the only goal of the game late on.

This will be Cavan's first championship outing and the winner will go on to play Tyrone in the semi-final in Clones on the last Sunday of this month.

Cavan (SFC v Donegal): James Reilly; James McEnroe, Patrick Carroll, Dane O'Dowd; Niall Murray, John McCutcheon, Damien Reilly; Ray Cullivan, David Givney; Gearóid McKiernan, Micheal Lyng, Fergal Flanagan; Niall McDermott, Eugene Keating, Sean Johnston.
